Our Mission Statement: Located in Southeast Michigan, Junkyard Dogs, Inc. (JYD) is an innovative 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the training and education of people to promote responsible dog ownership with a focus on rescue.

Our Story & Purpose

Focus On Rescue & Education

“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” - Roger Caras

According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS):
• 6-8 million dogs and cats enter  shelters  each year (est.)
• 3-4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year by shelters (est.)
• Twenty-five percent (25%) of all dogs who end up in shelters are purebred.

The Concept Becomes Reality

The concept of an all-rescue dog sports team became reality in 2003. Our goals are to:
    • Exhibit the talents and potential of  rescue dogs
    • Educate the public with demonstrations and information
    • Help all dog owners better understand, interact, and develop a stronger bond with
       their four-footed family member.
All sponsorship monies go toward saving, training, and re-homing dogs; partnering with fellow rescue organizations; and educating the public with basic dog information and positive training techniques. Our ultimate goal is to build a low-cost training/activity center

Education & Partnering Programs

"To err is human; to forgive is Canine." - Anonymous

Junkyard Dogs spotlights the rescue dog and what he/she is capable of with a little training and attention. Our mission is to promote responsible pet ownership by...
• Educating the public in how to train and communicate with their dog
• Reducing the animal overpopulation problem via education
• Helping people find the right dog for their lifestyle
• Rescuing good dogs who were matched with the wrong people
We will accomplish these goals through:
• Distribution of positive reinforcement training materials
• Direct consultation and owner training
• Adoption support system
• Proper evaluation, assessment, training, and placement of "throw-away" dogs
• Partnering with other volunteer rescue groups by assisting with fundraising, veterinary, and educational needs
Our ultimate goal is to build a training facility offering low- or no- cost training solutions.

From Tragedy, A Vision Comes To Life

“Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.”
- Mark Twain

On March 17, 2003, the dog world lost a person who epitomized what humanity should be about.  Chris Chambers Novak, a teacher, Michigan Leader Dogs for the Blind pioneer, and integral part of the Pawbusters Flyball team left us suddenly and unexpectedly.

It is as part of Chris' legacy that we were able to create the all-rescue dog sports club,
Junkyard Dogs.  Her spirit and memory will always be a part of us.
